Twelve series in the Hagel Archives are open for research as of March 2019. Series are being opened annually as they are processed. The following series are contained in 242 cubic foot boxes: Campaign Records; Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; Committee on Foreign Relations; Grant Files; Personal Papers; Photographs; Press, Media, and Speeches; Schedules; and Travel Files. Artifacts are stored in a variety of ways and number hundreds of items. Audio Files and Videos are in digital form and accessed online or on an external hard drive. Please see the Scope and Content Notes under each series record for a description of the materials.

Charles "Chuck" Hagel was born on October 4, 1946, in North Platte, Nebraska. Before attending the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history, Hagel served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1968 and volunteered to serve in the Vietnam War. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and other military honors for his time in Vietnam. In 1971, Hagel became chief of staff to Congressman John McCollister of Nebraska.
